so im gonna be taking a welding course at school next semester...not body shop type stuff, but welding none the less. a buddy of mine has a shop with all the welding, and i am thinking that once i know how to weld, why not practice some body type stuff (like rust repair) on my own car. i figure if it comes out good i can shave moldings etc while im at it. But how hard is this stuff really? i dont care if i fuck uo my car (not like thats hard to do) but am i gonna be getting in over my head or is this something that can be picked up with some time and patience?
Also, are there any tricks that i should know about before i get started? things to do and not do etc? thanks.

Welding sheet metal is harder than the heavier gauge stuff you'll be used to but it is a skill that can be learned with practice. If you have someone handy while you're doing it to show you what you're doing wrong it's best. I always had my uncle around to keep me out of trouble. My biggest problem is I don't weld often enough to keep in practice.
Go for it.
